Students become scientists. Students of the upper secondary level develop the current state of knowledge about stem cells, discuss current research approaches and reflect on ethical aspects. With elements of a scientific conference they present each other their new knowledge.

NEW 2020: We have supplemented the topics of therapy and ethics with current cases.
The teaching units can also be used in digital lessons.

Four lessons of 90 minutes each are freely available. The didactically prepared material can be used immediately and can be supplemented by the teachers themselves. The four teaching units deepen the knowledge of stem cells for high school students. We offer explanatory texts, articles, graphics, task sheets and lesson plans in one document, easy to download.

This material is also available in German.
Dieses Material gibt es auch auf Deutsch. stammzellen-verstehen.de

Why do we do that? The German Stem Cell Network and its scientific experts would like to inform students with fact-checked material about stem cell research. The Ernst Schering Foundation has the didactic aim of introducing young adults to state-of-the-art research and encouraging them in their continuing interest in science. Together, we started this project to give students fascinating insights into stem cell research.

Teaching Modules
Basics

The module "Basics" gives an introductory overview in stem cell research. Here you will find the topics "stem cell types" - especially blood stem cells - as well as the basics of reprogramming.

To Session
Ethics

In the lesson "Ethics" you will find information and thinking for an independent opinion on ethical aspects in stem cell research.

To Session
Therapy

In the session "Therapy" you will find background information on therapeutic applications with stem cells in various diseases such as skin burns, liver failure, corneal clouding, leukemia, diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

To Session
Genetics

The teaching unit "Genetics" deals with changes in the genetic material. Genetic modifications caused by environmental factors, epigenetics, is explained. The technical possibilities of CRISPR / Cas9 are shown.
