Stem cells carry properties that are inherited. Using genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR / Cas, these properties can be specifically changed. This allows for tailor-made therapies and the use of stem cells for regenerative medicine. Important for the interaction of genetics and stem cell research is also the field of epigenetics and cloning.

Material and tasks fot the lesson Genetics

In this lesson, students develop basics of genetics and epigenetics. Like conference participants, they prepare an opening (Chair), an introduction and a PowerPoint slide. Topics include epigenetics, researchers such as Conrad Hal Waddington and Emmanuelle Charpentier, as well as the CRISPR / Cas9 process and news on cloning as early lessons from sheep Dolly.

Task Chair: As a chair, prepare a short introduction to the term "epigenetics". Differentiate the term from genetics and visualize epigenetic changes in the genome. Using the example of a bee or identical twins, illustrate how epigenetic differences can affect each other.

Task Moderation: Prepare a moderation for: Conrad Hal Waddington and Emmanuelle Charpentier.

Task PowerPoint Slide: Prepare a meaningful PowerPoint slide with bullet points. You will receive a newspaper article or a graphic on one of the topics "The current state of cloning" or "The procedure CRISPR/Cas9".

The lesson series is structured like a scientific conference - the pupils assume the role of a scientist. They develop the research knowledge and present it in the different formats of a conference.

Welcome: At conferences, the chair will accept the greeting and generally introduce the topic of the conference day. The chair is something like the chairman of the conference.

Moderation: Important speakers at conferences are moderated. It briefly says something about her person and her research.

PowerPoint slide: At conferences, scientists often present their results with PowerPoint presentations. These are the most important facts and figures, for example with diagrams.
